Abstract Vitamins C and E are potent antioxidants that reduces the harmful effects of stress in several species including fish. In this study, it was evaluated the effect of vitamins C, E and their combination in the acute aerocystitis induced by inactivated Aeromonas hydrophila in pacu. 288 fish were distributed into 4 groups supplemented for 90 days: G1-control; G2-supplemented with 500 mg of Vitamin C; G3-supplemented with 500 mg of Vitamin E; G4-supplemented with 500 mg of Vitamin C + 500 mg of Vitamin E. The fish were divided in three groups, the first was not inoculated; second were inoculated in the swim bladder with 3 x 109 CFU of inactivated A. hydrophila and the last one with saline. The inflammatory exudate was collected from the swim bladder for assessment of cellular component and cytochemistry. The results showed higher accumulation of leukocytes in fish inoculated with bacteria. Cytochemistry was effective identifying thrombocytes, lymphocytes, macrophages and, granulocytes present in the exudate. It was also observed fish that received supplementation with vitamins presented higher accumulation of total cells in the exudate with a predominance of lymphocytes and thrombocytes. These results suggested that supplementation with vitamins improved the immunological responses.

Resumo As vitaminas C e E são potentes antioxidantes que reduzem os efeitos nocivos do estresse em várias espécies, incluindo peixes. Neste estudo, avaliou-se o efeito das vitaminas C, E e sua combinação na aerocistite aguda induzida por Aeromonas hydrophila inativada em pacu. 288 peixes foram distribuídos em 4 grupos suplementados por 90 dias: G1-controle; G2-suplementado com 500 mg de Vitamina C; G3-suplementado com 500 mg de Vitamina E; G4-suplementado com 500 mg de Vitamina C + 500 mg de Vitamina E. Os peixes foram divididos em três grupos, o primeiro não foi inoculado; o segundo foi inoculado na bexiga natatória com 3 x 109 UTC de A. hydrophila inativada e a última com soro fisiológico. O exsudato inflamatório foi coletado da bexiga natatória para avaliação do componente celular e citoquímica. Os resultados mostraram maior acúmulo de leucócitos nos peixes inoculados com a bactéria. A citoquímica foi eficaz na identificação de trombócitos, linfócitos, macrófagos e granulócitos presentes no exsudato. Também foi observado que os peixes que receberam suplementação com vitaminas apresentaram maior acúmulo de células totais no exsudato com predominância de linfócitos e trombócitos. Esses resultados sugeriram que a suplementação com vitaminas melhorou as respostas imunológicas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on the growth performance, blood profile and intestinal morphometry in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in cages. 936 Nile tilapias were distributed in 12 cages (1.5 m³). Fish were fed for 90 days on basal diets containing 0 (control); 1x10(6) CFU g-1; 5x10(6) CFU g-1; and 1x10(7) CFU g-1 of the probiotic. The results showed no significant difference on performance and proximal composition of fish. Blood glucose and hemoglobin were lower in 1x10(7) CFU g-1 group, suggesting improves of the homeostatic state of the fish. Other hematimetric indices did not differ between groups. It was observed significant increase of villi height and in the number of goblet cells of the intestine in fish supplemented 5x10(6) CFU g-1 and 1x10(7) CFU g-1 of food suggesting that fish improved the digestion and absorption of nutrients. However, more studies are needed to determine the efficacy of this probiotic in field conditions in Nile tilapia.

El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto del probiótico Bacillus amyloliquefaciens en el desempeño del crecimiento, hemograma y morfometría intestinal en tilapia del Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) criadas en balsas jaulas. 936 tilapias del Nilo se distribuyeron en 12 balsas jaulas (1,5 m³). Los peces fueron alimentados durante 90 días con dietas que contenían 0 (control); 1x 10(6) UFC g-1; 5x10(6) UFC g-1 y 1x10(7) UFC g-1 del probiótico. Los resultados no mostraron diferencias significativas en el rendimiento y composición proximal de los peces. La glucosa en sangre y hemoglobina fue menor en el grupo 1x10(7) UFC g-1, lo que sugiere un mejor estado homeostático de los peces. Otros parámetros hematimétricos no difirieron entre los grupos. Se observó aumento significativo de la altura de las vellosidades y número de células caliciformes del intestino en los peces suplementados con 5x10(6) UFC g-1 y 1x 10(7) UFC g-1 de alimento que sugieren que los peces mejoraron la digestión y absorción de nutrientes. Sin embargo, se necesitan más estudios para determinar la eficacia de este probiótico en condiciones de campo en tilapia del Nilo.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência e distribuição sazonal das principais espécies de parasitas em ciclídeos ornamentais amazônicos que afetam seu comércio. O estudo foi realizado entre agosto de 2007 e setembro de 2009. Foram amostrados 3042 espécimes de 9 espécies diferentes, das quais 9,47% tinham pelo menos um tipo de parasita externo. Na estação seca, ocorreram 81,25% dos casos. Crenicichla anthurus (28,57%) foi o mais parasitado, seguido por Aequidens diadema (26,32%), Pterophyllum scalare (22,69%), Cichlasoma sp. (9,52%), Apistogramma sp. (3,88%), e Symphysodon aequifasciatus (3,66%). Monogenea foi o grupo mais abundante de parasitas, ocorrendo em 66,67% dos casos. Na estação seca, ocorreram 96,88% deles. Este parasita infestou 95,68% dos casos em Pterophyllum scalare, 76,67% em Apistogramma sp., 33,33% em Cichlasoma sp. e 23,81% em Symphysodon aequifasciatus. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infestou 100% dos casos em Aequidens diadema, 76,19% em Symphysodon aequifasciatus, 66,67% em Cichlasoma sp., 41,67% em Crenicichla anthurus e 23,33% em Apistogramma sp.; Myxosporidia infestou 58,33% dos casos em Crenicichla anthurus; Trichodina infestou 4,32% dos casos em Pterophyllum scalare. A prevalência desses parasitas está relacionada com a época do ano, hábitat preferido, comportamento dos peixes, suscetibilidade individual e manejo dos animais durante o transporte pelos pescadores.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and seasonal distribution of the main parasite species in Amazonian ornamental cichlids that affect their trade. The study was conducted from August 2007 to September 2009. We sampled 3042 specimens from 9 different species, of which 9.47% had at least one type of external parasite. 81.25% of the cases occurred in the dry season. Crenicichla anthurus (28.57%) was the most parasitized, followed by Aequidens diadema (26.32%), Pterophyllum scalare (22.69%), Cichlasoma sp. (9.52%), Apistogramma sp. Myxosporidia infested 58.33% of Crenicichla anthurus. Trichodina infested 4.32% of Pterophyllum scalare. The prevalence of these parasites is related to the season, preferred habitat, fish behavior, individual susceptibility and handling of animals during transportation by fishermen.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a inter-relação entre a suplementação alimentar com parede celular de Saccharomyces cerevisae e a vacinação contra Streptococcus agalactiae e seu efeito sobre o desempenho produtivo e as variáveis hematológicas de tilápia-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus). Oitenta e quatro tilápias-do-nilo foram distribuídas em 12 caixas de fibra (n=7), em arranjo fatorial 2x2x3, correspondente a dois níveis de suplementação com parede celular de levedura, dois tipos de inoculação e três tempos de avaliação. Os peixes foram alimentados durante 77 dias. A vacinação dos peixes foi realizada 60 dias após o início da alimentação. Quinze dias após a vacinação, todos os peixes foram submetidos ao desafio com cepa viva de S. agalactiae, e 6, 24 e 48 horas após o desafio, o sangue foi colhido da veia caudal para avaliações. Peixes alimentados com ração suplementada apresentam maior ganho de peso e taxa de crescimento específico, e a interação entre os efeitos da dieta e da vacinação resulta em maiores taxas de hematócrito, hemoglobina e leucócitos.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the inter-relationship between dietary supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall and vaccination against Streptococcus agalactiae, and its effect on the productive performance and hematological variables of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Eighty-four Nile tilapia were distributed in 12 fiber boxes (n=7), in a 2x2x3 factorial arrangement, corresponding to two levels of supplementation with yeast cell wall, two types of inoculation, and three evaluation times. Fish were fed during 77 days. Vaccination of fish was done 60 days after feeding started. Fifteen days after vaccination, all fish were subjected to challenge with live strain of S. agalactiae, and 6, 24, and 48 hours after the challenge, blood was collected from the caudal vein for evaluations. Fish fed with supplemented diets show greater weight gain and specific growth rate, and the interaction between the diet and vaccination effects results in higher hematocrit, hemoglobin, and leukocyte rates.
